China trip: DFG and German Embassy honor TU
Clausthal-Zellerfeld. "The events in China were a highlight, I am still thrilled." This was the conclusion of University President Professor Thomas Hanschke after everyone from the Clausthal University of Technology delegation returned from the trip to the Far East. Three high-ranking Chinese science representatives with Clausthal roots, including the Minister of Science and Technology, Professor Wan Gang, have announced their return visit to the Harz Mountains this year.
The activities in China - culminating in the founding of the "Association of Chinese Alumni of Clausthal University of Technology" - were also praised by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the German Embassy in Beijing. Dr. Ingrid Krüßmann, Director of International Relations in the Asia-Pacific region at the DFG, spoke of a "brilliant event". It was an extraordinary sign of appreciation for Clausthal University of Technology and the new alumni club that Research Minister Wan Gang was present for more than four hours at the launch and spoke very openly.
Julia Kundermann, representing the German Embassy, emphasized the foresight of the Clausthal scientists: "Many years before China became the focus of world attention as an up-and-coming economic nation, Clausthal University of Technology had already established intensive relations with the Asian region." And it was the first university with a China representative, she said, referring to Professor Michael Z. Hou.
Professor Hou had prepared the trip for the 10-strong Clausthal delegation together with Andrea Langhorst from Alumni Management. The academic program was sponsored by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). The first stop was the fourth Sino-German Energy Conference at the beginning of June, which was jointly organized with Sichuan University in Chengdu. Also in Chengdu, a city of 10 million inhabitants in southwest China, the first Sino-German workshop on "Unconventional Gas" was held together with Southwest Petroleum University (SWPU). Clausthal University of Technology signed cooperation agreements with SWPU (Chengdu) and Beihang University (Beijing), one of the leading Chinese universities in the field of engineering.
China thus continues to be the most important partner country of the very internationally oriented Clausthal University of Technology. Around 500 students from China are enrolled at the university in the Upper Harz Mountains. "The hospitality and warmth with which our Chinese friends have welcomed us is exemplary," said Professor Hanschke. Three influential Chinese are now expected to visit southern Lower Saxony in the fall. Xu Delong, Vice-President of the renowned Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Xu Huibin, President of Beihang University and Chairman of the new Clausthal Alumni Club, plan to visit their former alma mater in September. Minister Wan Gang is planning to come in November.
