Delegation from the Chinese Academy of Engineering in Clausthal for talks

Clausthal-Zellerfeld. An eight-member delegation from the influential Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) visited Clausthal University of Technology for several days to explore opportunities for cooperation. The group was led by the Vice President of the CAE, Professor Xu Delong, who studied in the Upper Harz and is Honorary Chairman of the Chinese Alumni Association of Clausthal University of Technology.

Xu Delong studied at the Clausthal Institute of Energy Process and Fuel Technology (IEVB) in the late 1980s and graduated with a degree in engineering in 1990. For decades, the renowned scientist has been particularly interested in cement and combustion technology. Four years ago, when he was still President of Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology, he visited his former university and met with TU professors Roman Weber, Albrecht Wolter and Reinhard Scholz.

This time, the Chinese delegation, including six professors, exchanged specific information with their Clausthal colleagues on the research topics of "breathing" cement plants, geothermal energy, combustion technology and environmental technology. The delegation from the Far East also visited the IEVB and the Institute for Non-Metallic Materials. The program was organized by Professor Michael Z. Hou, the TU's China representative, who had last visited China in June with Clausthal University President Professor Thomas Hanschke and other scientists and had established the contacts.

At the official meeting with the university management, the focus was on the topic of "Structural change in an industrial region" in addition to the alumni area. Professor Oliver Langefeld, Clausthal Vice President for Studies and Teaching and mining expert, presented the "Blue Mining" concept. This approach goes beyond sustainability in mining. Even in the planning process for a mine, the subsequent use is included, for example as an energy park. Although the research results in this country would have to be adapted to Chinese conditions, the interaction of Chinese and European ways of thinking could create something new that would inspire research, said Professor Langefeld.

The visit to the Oberharzer Wasserregal World Heritage Site also focused on the recultivation of an industrial landscape. The tour can be traced from the Upper Harz (early 20th century) to the Ruhr region (second half of the 20th century) and the central German chemical triangle (late 20th century) to China (21st century).

The Chinese Academy of Engineering is a national organization whose elected members have an excellent reputation in the field of engineering and technical sciences. Similar to a ministry, the academy, which is based in Beijing, is responsible for major national construction projects of strategic importance.
