TU Clausthal's first alumni association abroad is founded in China in June

Clausthal-Zellerfeld. Big events are casting their shadows ahead: at the beginning of June, a 10-strong delegation from Clausthal University of Technology is flying to Beijing. On June 6, the "Association of Chinese Alumni of Clausthal University of Technology" will be founded in the Chinese capital in the presence of Professor Wan Gang, Research Minister of the People's Republic and graduate of Clausthal University of Technology.

This is the first time that former students of the university abroad have come together to form an association. The founding ceremony is also embedded in a premiere, namely the first TUC Alumni Academy, which will take the form of a conference from June 6 to 11 on the topic of "Energy transition in the context of sustainable development and global climate protection". Minister Wan Gang will give the keynote speech in front of around 100 conference participants.

"The founding of this association underlines the high standing that Clausthal University of Technology enjoys in the People's Republic of China. Both sides have maintained close contacts for years," emphasized Professor Thomas Hanschke. The university president will lead the Clausthal delegation, which will also include Professors Andreas Rausch and Oliver Langefeld from the university management and Dr. Stephan Röthele (Sympatec GmbH) as a Clausthal company representative. The trip to China is being organized by Professor Michael Z. Hou, the TU's China Representative, and Andrea Langhorst (Alumni Management).

Since the early 1980s, more and more young people from China have been attracted to the Upper Harz region. There are currently 500 students from the Asian country enrolled at the TU. This makes them the largest foreign group at the university. Many Chinese graduates find direct employment in Germany or complete a doctorate after their studies. Others return to China and are professionally successful in their home country. "Our alumni there are ambassadors for Clausthal University of Technology abroad and valuable cooperation partners," emphasizes Professor Hanschke. Alumnus Professor Xu Huibin has just been promoted to President of Beihang University at the end of March. He is one of a whole series of TU graduates who now hold leading positions in science and business in China.

The first specialist conference of the TUC Alumni Academy will take place in order to further expand the many good connections to the Far East and to work even more closely together in research and teaching. It is being funded with around 60,000 euros by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the venue in Beijing is the Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (Beihang University). The focus will be on topics relating to the energy transition, such as underground energy storage, decentralized energy supply, deep geothermal energy and battery technologies.
