Ceremony and inaugural lecture: Minister Wan Gang visits Clausthal in April

Clausthal-Zellerfeld. Big events are casting their shadows ahead. As part of a visit to Germany lasting several days, Professor Wan Gang, Minister of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China, will be appointed honorary professor at Clausthal University of Technology on April 10. One day later, he will give an inaugural lecture at the university in the Harz Mountains and visit the Energy Research Center before the 63-year-old continues his journey to Leipzig and Berlin.

Professor Wan Gang received his doctorate from Clausthal University of Technology in 1991 with a dissertation in the field of drive technology. He has remained closely connected to his former alma mater for more than two decades. Last summer, for example, he was present when the "Association of Chinese Alumni of Clausthal University of Technology" was founded in Beijing and took over the patronage. Wan Gang last met with Clausthal University President Professor Thomas Hanschke in January of this year. The TU President had accompanied Federal Research Minister Johanna Wanka on her trip to China.

The appointment as honorary professor will be integrated into a ceremony in the Aula Academica. Planning is well advanced and more than 200 invited guests are expected. The topic of "German-Chinese cooperation" will be discussed in a panel discussion. In addition to Wan Gang and the Clausthal University President, a member of the Lower Saxony state cabinet and a top representative from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research will also be taking part.

The ceremony will be characterized by German and Chinese elements. The pianist Jieni Wan, the minister's daughter, will open the event with music. Hans Christian Wille (HarzClassixFestival) will then also be heard on the piano. After the official part, German and Chinese dishes will be served at the get-together, prepared by Clausthal students from both countries. A delegation from our friends at Sichuan University in Chengdu will also be among the guests at the ceremony.

The following day, on April 11, Professor Wan Gang will give his inaugural lecture (probably at 8 a.m., Audimax, TU Main Building). Clausthal students are welcome to attend. The one-hour event will focus on the future topic of electromobility. After his time at the TU, Wan Gang spent a decade working in research and development at car manufacturer Audi. The lecture will be followed by a short visit to the Energy Research Center and the Battery and Sensor Test Center on the TU Clausthal Energy Campus in Goslar.
