Nationwide Positive Example: TU Electrical Engineering Degree Program

According to a study by the VDE association, the quality of the Clausthal degree program has led to steadily increasing student numbers.

Contrary to the nationwide trend, interest in the Electrical Engineering degree program at TU Clausthal continues to rise. This was analyzed by VDE (the Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies) in its 2026 higher education study. In the Upper Harz region, student numbers in Electrical Engineering have been steadily increasing since 2017. In the current winter semester, 61 new students enrolled. In total, 139 students are currently registered in the Bachelor’s program.

In its press release on the study, VDE refers to a “positive example in Clausthal.” Academic advisor Prof. Christian Rembe, who also represents TU Clausthal in the Council of Faculties for Electrical Engineering, explains the reasons: improvements to the program offering, clearer transitions into Master’s programs, and targeted internationalization. For example, a cooperation with a Chinese partner university has led to an increase in international students.

Comparatively Low Failure Rates

Quality of teaching and the feasibility of studying are high priorities at TU Clausthal. Theoretically demanding content is taught in a comprehensible way. Modern lab courses support lecture content and have been designed to be practice-oriented. TU places great emphasis on fairness in examinations. “As a small university, we know we have to offer a strong program,” says Professor Rembe. Sample solutions from past exams are made available and, together with tutorial courses, help students prepare for challenging subjects such as the Theory of Electromagnetic Fields and Waves (Theoretical Electrical Engineering). As a result, comparatively low failure rates are achieved in this subject. TU Clausthal also ranks among the leading institutions in Electrical Engineering in terms of the proportion of female students. In addition to the high quality of the program, appropriate promotion of the offering is also important for long-term success.

VDE is one of Europe’s largest technology organizations. As the only association of its kind, it brings together science, standardization, testing, certification, and application consulting. VDE is committed to supporting research and young talent as well as lifelong learning.
